🌾The Village as a Teacher
Reflections on Simplicity, Presence, and Living Wisdom
I believe people are in urgent need of self-education.
Unnecessary desires often cloud our ability to make sound decisions, but self-education is what gently peels those layers back. This world is a vast classroom, every moment, every place holds something to learn.
A few years ago, I visited my father’s village in the hills. A place I hadn’t been to in a long time. Life there is tough; the terrain makes even daily routines challenging. Yet, despite the hardships, I found something soothing and peaceful, something the familiar comforts of city life couldn’t offer.
I immersed myself in that slow rhythm and found deep joy. I didn’t miss the city at all.
The people I met were simple and grounded. Their lives, though modest, radiated calmness. Their hospitality was warm, their presence quiet yet full. These weren’t just rural rituals; they were living lessons.
Whether we live in cities or villages, one truth remains:
We all need self-education.
🧭The Inner Curriculum
Why Self-Education Is the Compass We Need
To truly educate oneself, one must practice mental discipline.
Self-education trains the mind to confront ego, dullness, and distraction. It gives us clarity and reduces the influence of restless desires that weaken our inner compass.
As Michael Faraday once said,
“Self-education removes the clutter that clouds judgment.”
I’ve met many people who constantly complain that “nothing is right with the world.” They speak endlessly of what’s broken, but rarely take a single step toward change.
Sometimes, I find more loyalty, simplicity, and quiet intelligence in a dog than in the constant noise of those unwilling to act.
We live in a society that often honors assertiveness but dismisses gentleness. Yet, I remain hopeful. I believe that, with time, things can change.
Though I’ve only glimpsed a small corner of rural life, I feel like I’m always learning something new.
There’s still so much to see, absorb, and understand.
This world is a great school -
and life itself, the lesson.
The Art of Listening, the Practice of Learning
In a world full of noise, self-education is the art of listening deeply to ourselves, to others, and to the wisdom of ordinary moments.
If we commit to learning with humility and act with intention, even small steps can bring about meaningful change.
