The Silent Teacher Within
The disciple approached the master with reverence and hope. But the master, gazing deeply into the eyes of his visitor, said gently,
"I cannot teach anyone anything, for I myself am a lifelong learner. In truth, no one teaches another. One learns only when something within awakens."
A brief silence followed. Then the master continued,
"Your coming here is your own grace upon me. And those who sent you, they’ve done me a favor, believing I might have something to offer. But I know I am not worthy. What do I have to give, when I too remain a student of life?"
He looked around and added,
"What is a Guru if not a guide for your own awakening? Learning comes not from me but from the spark within you. The Guru is only a witness, a presence, a mirror."
The young seeker bowed and said,
“Even before coming here, I had accepted you as my teacher.”
The master smiled.
“As you wish, child. Stay as long as you need. You will have all the space for reflection and study. But before anything else—look around. See. Feel. Experience. Take in as much joy as you can from this moment.”
The seeker obeyed. He returned a while later.
"What did you see?" asked the master.
"I saw a bird. A most beautiful one. My heart wished I could be like it—free, soaring across the skies."
The master remained silent. Then softly said, “That’s imagination. Go again.”
The young man returned later.
"What did you see now?"
"I saw a lovely bird again. And I wished to catch it—to keep it close, in a cage, so I could admire it always."
The master nodded, “Now you’ve seen more clearly—but it’s not yet the truth. Go, once more.”
And when the disciple returned again, his eyes glowed with clarity.
"I saw the same bird. But this time, I only watched. I told myself—it is a bird, it is beautiful, it is rare. And then it flew away. And I said—yes, it was beautiful, and it is gone. And it belongs to itself. That is enough."
A quiet smile spread across the master’s face.
"Now you have truly seen. That’s all I had to teach. And even this—you discovered on your own. I told you, didn’t I? No one really teaches anyone. The teacher is merely a presence—a reminder."
True learning is not a transaction—it is a transformation. Life is a continuous classroom, where the smallest observation can become the greatest lesson. Let us remain open, humble, and curious—always ready to learn from the silence between words, from the space between thoughts, and from the stillness of our own being.
Let every moment be your teacher, and let your heart remain the eternal student.
With Stillness,
